Andaz Salon Wine Tasting

private dining room

Join us for a complimentary wine tasting event in our Wine Gallery (lobby level), Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Our Andaz Salon is free and everyone is welcome (over the age of 21 of course).

We have partnered with the experts at V Wine Room to guide us through this evening; they have curated a selection of wines from boutique California wineries. Valet and self-parking is available for a fee, or take Uber / Lyft. This time we are featuring two California wineries, Winery SF and Pine and Brown:

The Winery SF

Located on Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.  All of the fruit is sourced from the north coast, or the counties of Napa, Sonoma, Mendicino and Lake, while the crushing, barreling, aging, bottling and distribution is done on Treasure Island.  The Winery SF has been credited as the first urban winery in the country with the wines being produced within the city limits of San Francisco.  The project began as a response to the "radius concept" some of the restaurants and small markets in San Francisco began implementing.  The "radius concept" means that restaurants and small markets would only source produce, proteins, dairy and even wine from a radius no further than 40 miles outside of San Francisco.  This left out many of the wineries in Napa and Sonoma counties, and all of the wineries in Lake and Mendicino Counties.  Today there are 8 wineries on Treasure Island with another 4 in San Francisco proper on Bluxom Street.  The Winery SF is the third winery for owner and winemaker Bryan Kane.  Many of the wines Bryan makes under the Winery SF are a tribute to the city of San Francisco and the people who live there.

Winery SF Viognier is a light but floral example of the Viognier varietal.  The nose is rich with honeysuckle and hints of jasmine and gardenia.  On the palate, sweet fruit notes of apricot and honey dominate with a little acid on the finish for good balance.  The wine is dry with 0% residual sugars, however the sweeter fruit notes and honey quality make the wine seem like it is sweet.

Winery SF Merlot is a very approachable Merlot.  It has medium intensity fruits with notes of dark raspberry and cherry.  This Merlot isn't as earthy as most other examples of the varietal, but that is one reason it is more approachable to those who might not like Merlot.

Pine and Brown winery

Growing up in the mid-west, Tom caught the wine bug while working at Kahn's Fine Wines in Indianapolis as he pursed his Chemistry degree at Purdue University. His first job in wine production was as an intern wine chemist at Charles Krug Winery in 2002. As the Krug internship concluded, Tom accepted a position as the Winemaking Technical Manager at St. Supéry Vineyards, which eventually paved a path to the Assistant Winemaker position. After six very enjoyable years at St. Supéry, Tom was ready for a new challenge and moved on to Rombauer Vineyards, where he would focus on the red wine program as the Associate Winemaker. In 2011 Tom decided to take the plunge and build a new winery on the corner of Pine and Brown streets in Old Town Napa. With the help of his wife and two sons, they demolished the old garage and built a small bonded winery capable of making eight barrels of hand-crafted wine each vintage. In addition to operating Pine and Brown Winery, Tom represents AEB Biochemical, works as a consulting winemaker for other small Napa Valley wineries, and serves as the Secretary for the California Enological Research Association.

Pine and Brown Sauvignon Blanc: The finished wine has lovely citrus blossom and Meyer lemon aromas, with delicate white peach flavors that are held in vibrant focus with lively acidity and seamless texture. This beautifully structured Sauvignon Blanc will age gracefully for the next five years. Unlike most Sauvignon Blancs that are aged in steel, this one is aged in neutral French oak.

Pine and Brown Cabernet Sauvignon: The 2011 Pine and Brown Winery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced solely from the Garvey Home Ranch in Rutherford. The cordon-pruned Clone 4 is planted on a steep, low-yielding hillside block that produces loose, small-berried clusters that contribute to deep color and concentrated tannins. The Clone 7, the work horse of the Napa Valley, is cane-pruned and rooted in deep loamy soil. This parcel produces a fruit profile that exemplifies the elegant flavors and fine tannins that are often associated with the Rutherford appellation.
